Everything about this fluoride free toothpaste is excellent. The taste the aftertaste and the cleaning ability are outstanding .

I love this toothpaste but I’m quite annoyed that although the picture is for two tubes only one came in the box – £15 for one tube of toothpaste?!? What a scam!

    The Story:
In January 2023 I purchased Tom’s of Maine Anti plaque and Whitening Fluoride-Free Toothpaste, Peppermint, 5.5-Ounce Pack of 2 (Turquoise coloured tube with cerise pink highlights) because it is vegan, gluten and fluoride free.
I had been drinking copious amounts of coffee recently and despite brushing them regularly, my teeth had gone yellow and remained stained.
The Tom’s rectified this almost immediately and the flavour and texture, for me anyway, are good and my teeth feel refreshingly squeaky clean, so far so good.
I noticed that I have been ‘forgetful’ for example; I go to look something up on the net and then cannot remember what it is I was searching for, I’d go to the pantry and wonder why I am there, I get a pen and paper to write something down and I draw a blank. Now you could say, well that sort of thing happens to everyone now and again and yes it has happened to me on occasion. However, this is happening to me almost on a daily basis and more than once a day.
Looking up information on ingredients in skincare products led me to stumble across an article regarding toothpaste ingredients that should be avoided.
The vast majority of popular toothpaste brands contain toxins that result in brain damage, lowered IQ, dementia, lethargy, skeletal fluorosis, bone fractures, increased cancer cell growth, weakened immune system, muscle disorders and the like.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing – I should have looked at the ingredients of this toothpaste but neglected to do so…

    The Product/Company:
Toms’ of Maine contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS):
SLS is an inexpensive detergent and foaming agent added to almost every conventional soap, shampoo and toothpaste. It is known to easily penetrate the skin and oral mucosa.
The foaming caused by SLS in toothpaste gives you the illusion that the toothpaste is working better. But in truth, foaming plays little or no role in the act of cleaning teeth. The trouble with all that foam is that the SLS used to create it, is usually contaminated with known carcinogens. SLS itself is also a known skin irritant.
The common SLS contaminant, 1,4-dioxane, mimics oestrogens when it enters the body. 1,4-dioxane has been classified as a possible carcinogen and has been linked to male infertility, liver, lung, breast, skin and gallbladder cancer. It is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It can also damage the kidneys, liver and central nervous system.

    Toms’ of Maine contains Carrageenan:
Carrageenan is used as a thickener. This is a very deceptive one that is used in many organic foods and toothpastes. Carrageenan is considered ‘healthy’ by many because it comes from seaweed and is natural. But not everything natural is safe or good – the liver of a puffer fish is 100% natural, yet it’s one of the most poisonous and deadliest things to eat. The problem with carrageenan is that it is a powerful inflammatory agent. Inflammation in the body has been linked to countless different diseases, including heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Tom’s of Maine is not wholly vegan:
While most of Tom’s products are vegan, some products contain propolis and/or beeswax sourced from bees.

And for those of you who do not want to support multinational conglomerates:
    Tom’s of Maine has been a majority-owned subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive since 2006.

    The Verdict:
Is my toothpaste the cause of my ‘forgetfulness’ am I en-route to the dementia path if I continue its use, who knows. One thing is for sure, prevention is better than cure so I will give up this toothpaste, which is a shame as I love the colouring of the tube and like the product itself very much.
Despite any misgivings, as a whitening toothpaste it is excellent and the flavour and texture are good and my teeth were left feeling refreshingly squeaky clean.
The above narrative is my opinion only and does not in any way represent Tom’s of Maine or Amazon.

    PostScript:
I have managed to find an alternative which I have now added to my subscribe and save items which will arrive next month and will review in due course, that being Himalaya Botanique Complete Care Whitening Toothpaste, 150g which purports to be fluoride, triclosan, SLS, carrageenan, gluten and cruelty free, with no artificial colours or flavours and is vegan.

I was looking for a similar product for a long time. It’s fluoride free which means baby safe. My little one loves it. It tastes like a normal toothpaste. I will be ordering it every time I need it.
