Well, I’ve got to say I’m really very impressed with this hair dye mousse. I struggled to find it on our high street in a small Dorset town, but Amazon never fails for finding things. It was a really good price at £6.66 on here too at the time.

Just to set the science…I’m in my early 50’s and have box coloured my hair for many many years. I’m likely to be 85-100% grey now…..but have no idea 😂. I was born with white-blonde hair which had got darker as I got older. I’d say I’m a natural light brown more now. I have very curly 3b/3c curly that is dry, delicate and porous because i colour it.

John Frieda is a bit of a hero to us Curly girls so I trusted this brand before I started, and wanted to try the mousse against my usual brand Nice N Easy.

This colour mousse is without doubt the easiest and best box colour I’ve ever used. Using foam, for me, is far superior and easy to apply to very curly hair. Creams are quite thick and don’t spread through the hair that easily. The instructions are pictured through the stages and very easy to follow. The weirdest bit is that you automatically want to press the top of the pump down to obtain the foam, instead you need to squeeze the bottle to get the foam out. I’ve got very thick hair, and there’s plenty in this bottle to do all my hair at the moment (the length is level with my shoulders). Very easy to apply. However, it does say in the instructions (see photo) that the foam needs to look like the picture and foam piled on your head should be visible. This is not the case when I apply it. The foam quickly disappears and makes my hair look and feel damp, and feels wetter the more I apply. I’ve done this colour routine twice now and on both occasions I didn’t have a pile of foam on my head….saying that though it works and is amazing coverage. I wonder if that it’s because I use a lot of products on my hair and the instructions state to put on dry unwashed hair. I don’t know. It works brilliantly though. This John Freida box colour (mine is 9N), gives a very good even coverage with minimum effort and ease and looks a very natural blonde and like the colour on the box. Not brassy or an unnatural like some blonde dyes in the “Group 9” of the colour chart (9 being the lightest blonde in all makes). 9N, I’m guessing is 9 Natural, and very natural it looks too. I love it. Even 3 weeks later I can see no fading or patches of grey appearing. The colour holds well and doesn’t fade or go patchy.

Applying the foam, there is quite a strong smell to it. No worse or better than other brands so I’m used to that. It also causes my eyes to water a bit when applying just by breathing. Again the same as others I’ve used. I leave the foam on for 30 mins then wash off when in the shower. When rinsing it off the slip is very good and my hair feels soft and silky which I don’t get with Nice n Easy or Garnier Nuttrise. They both feel drying at this stage on my hair. I then shampoo my hair to ensure all the dye is out, then use the conditioner they provide in the box. My hair loves conditioner, so i use the whole tube in one application and leave to work its magic for 10 mins whilst im showering, Fantastic conditioner. Hair feels lovely and soft with great slip. I didn’t need to use my own conditioner brand as well aferwards, which is what I usually need to do when using the conditioner in other colouring boxes with other brands. This conditioner is so silky and rich it does leave a very slippery residue in the shower tray so be very very careful. It’s extremely slippery under foot. Ensure you rinse the shower tray thoroughly before someone else uses the shower after you too. Absolutely brilliant dye. Very Easy & quick to apply, Holds its colour, feels soft, excellent conditioner and a very good natural colour. This is now my new “go-to” box colour for sure.

I’m really pleased with the results, it gave me really even coverage and colour which seems to be quite elusive with other dyes. I really like that it is foam as its much easier and less messy to apply. Most of all I am pleasantly surprised how it didn’t seem to damage my hair, my hair felt soft as I was washing it off even before the condioner. Also, the amount of conditioner supplied is very generous compared to most dyes.
First time I have been happy with a dye for a long time.
    So happy days 😊

I am a 30 year old man and I’ve had grey hairs since I was a teenager. I have medium length dark brown hair and about 20% of it is white. The grey hairs are very noticeable in the light of day and it was bothering me a lot, especially if someone commented on it or I caught sight of my reflection in a mirror. I first tried some other methods (greying shampoo, mustard oil, the black tea method) with zero results, so I figured it was time to go down the dye route. I found this product by googling “easy to use hair dye”.

When I first opened the box, the contents were not too intimidating: there was just a bottle with liquid already in it, another small bottle of colorant, some post-dye conditioner, and a bottle attachment to dispense the dye. There was also a pair of black gloves and these were FAR too small for me, so I just didn’t use them. I didn’t notice any adverse effect on my skin as a result of forgoing them. I emptied the colorant into the bottle and turned it gently 5 times as instructed. Then I took my shirt off, stood in front of a mirror and squeezed the bottle into my hand. True enough, a satisfyingly large blob of foam was produced and I began the process of applying it to my hair.

One thing that I immediately liked about the dye was that it did not have a strong smell. I had been told before that some hair dyes have a strong feminine smell to them and this was a concern of mine. This one was reassuringly odorless more or less. It took about 4-5 minutes to completely saturate my hair with the foam. At this point I noticed there were dark patches all over my face where I had accidentally got some of the foam on to my skin, and I was a little alarmed.

Here’s when the fun stopped: the instructions advised to leave the foam in your hair for 30 minutes for full coverage, but within about 5 minutes my whole scalp felt like it was on fire. It was honestly one of the most uncomfortable things I’d ever felt. After 20 minutes it became unbearable. At about the 25 minute mark I was racing to the shower. To my relief, the sensation stopped as soon as I rinsed all the foam out under the shower. I showered as normal, avoiding putting soap on my hair like I usually do, and instead using the conditioner as instructed.

When I stepped out of the shower I was actually very pleased with the results. The dark patches on my skin that alarmed me earlier had been washed away. My hair appeared to be it’s regular color but more vibrant, and all the greys were completely gone. I asked my wife (who believe me, is always honest with me) and she told me it didn’t look like a dye job. Overall I was very happy with the result, especially as a first timer to hair dyeing. To summarise:

    Pros:
Odorless, very easy to apply (even I can do it), dark stains on skin wash away

    Cons:
Waiting period VERY uncomfortable, not cheap to purchase

Overall, I think I’d recommend this product, especially to any men who might be reading or people who are inexperienced with hair dye in general.

This hair dye is definitely great at covering greys and, after 3 weeks, still no sign of my numerous grey hairs!
My only gripe is that the colour is named as Medium Golden Brown but the result was a very rich, dark brown. A great colour, but as I am 80 years old and refuse to ‘go grey’, I was a little concerned that I would look like mutton dressed up as lamb! Howere, I love the colour and am happy with it so ‘who cares’ what anyone else thinks?

What I love about this product the most is the mousse formulation. Very easy to apply. To me you get more coverage as it basically sticks to your hair. No drips, no mess, no fuss. Takes less time to apply than other box dyes. I have shoulder length hair and there is more than enough product for required coverage. I always opt for dark chocolate brown. It leaves my hair very soft and shiny. It doesnt dry the ends of my hair out like other box dyes. Even my hairdresser was impressed. Tried other box dyes to cover my grey hairs (not that many). This one is the best out of them all.
