I’ve been using menstrual cups for about a year now, however I had issues getting my first brand to open properly and so sometimes experienced leaks. I decided to try this Evo Cup based on reviews. I’m 43 but have not had kids, so was a bit confused as to what size to get. I Took a punt at large, but I now realise this was the wrong choice. If I hadn’t used cups before I reckon it would have been a bit of a baptism of fire as it’s bulky when folded and I felt like I had to really “stuff it in there” (not for the faint hearted!). It was also too long for me (even after cutting the stem off completely) so although no less comfy than tampons – I could still feel it. On a positive note, it opened up much more easily than my previous brand; and so I didn’t experience any leakage as the suction worked effectively. I persevered for 2 periods with large; but on my third period I concluded that a smaller cup would be more comfortable for me. I ordered the small and it’s MUCH better (although I’ve chopped the stem off that one too). I’ve only used it for part of a cycle; but I love it for comfort, and it’s easier to insert and remove than the large. It lasts longer than tampons (I haven’t had to deal with my period at work since using cups because I sort it before I leave home and it lasts until I get back in the evening). No more sanitary waste in the bathroom bin. I just wish I’d discovered menstrual cups years ago. I’ve only given this 4 stars; and this is based on the price. I didn’t really want 2 cups of the same size – I’d have rather paid less and just had one. On top of that I bought the wrong size first; so I’ve got 2 large cups that I won’t use – plus a spare small that I might not need either. The grand total I’ve spent on the 1 cup that I am now using is just under £25. So although seemingly marketed as a cheaper alternative – it hasn’t worked out that way for me. But take the buying options out of the equation and the small Evo Cup is a winner for me.

Well made but very hard, but never has leaks as the suction is very firm.
Maybe I need a smaller cup too.

It was my second time using this cup when I went to Greece and whilst there we decided to go quad biking in the mountains of Crete which was very steep and rocky.
We were gone five hours and moving around a lot in the quad from the terrain I didn’t leak once! And this was on day 2 of my period and usually I will bleed through a tampon, a pad, my knickers and bottoms every hour-two hours (throughout the night was a like that scene from The Shining before I started using a cup!!) so I have an extremely heavy flow and this was perfect for the time spent outdoors.
I have even gone swimming with this in and again didn’t leak or move around and I felt secure wearing it.
When I wear it for work, as a teacher we don’t get much of a break, so I will put this in at 6/7am ish and then leave it in the whole day and change it when I get home around 4-5pm and even on my heaviest days I’m leak free. Getting a menstrual cup had easily been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Never used a cup before so this is my first time owning one. It fits me perfectly fine, small enough to fit a virgin. Only thing tho is that the cup kind of pokes me inside, so had to cut the stem to make it more. Careful not to cut too much as it might be difficult to pull out.

I’ve never used a cup before and have decided to give it a try as I’ve got fed up of feeling discomfort from wearing large pads and I’m too sensitive to wear tampons and also decided to get one to save myself some money as sanitary products have become very expensive.

I did a questionnaire to find out what size I should get and decided to practice using it before starting my cycle and will continue to practice.

My first time using one was terrifying. It was quite painful to insert as the ridge rubbed against my bone and was quite uncomfortable at first but I tried a different way of folding it and this made it a bit easier and also found lubricating it made things easier too.

It sat very comfortably, I couldn’t feel anything was there at all and was much more comfortable than a tampon or pad/towel.

When it came to removing it, I had a very stressful, scary, first time experience. Firstly, it was very difficult to reach the base and kept slipping from side to side making gripping it difficult. I followed instructions advising me to release the suction but found that when pinching the cup, it remained air tight and didn’t release the suction at all. It was incredibly difficult to grab the cup, as it tells you to use two fingers to do so but I found it almost impossible to fit them as well as fitting the cup, I felt like I barely even had space to fit the cup up there and the idea of grabbing it seemed like a mission for me as I’m just not shaped that way and it was very painful and sore to do this.

I tried various positions and finally found one that made things easiest and also found that what helped me in the end was pushing down, as if releasing when doing kegals/pelvic floor as this pushed the cup down making it easier to reach but was difficult to get a proper grip on it without slipping, eventually when I was able to remove it, it was a massive relief and was a pain free experience and didn’t hurt to remove it, however, the steps leading up to the removal, trying to release it and grab it, was very painful, my cervix is a lot lower during a cycle so I’m hoping it will be a lot easier to reach it.

I would definitely advise that you practice inserting and removing your cup of this is your first time using one and I also suggest practicing before you start your bleed so that there is less mess and you have a bit more freedom to change positions, try different removal/insertion techniques and practice in the comfort of your own bathroom/shower without things being messy and I would suggest that you start using your cup properly once you have managed/learnt to insert and remove it properly so that when you use it during a bleed, there is little mess, so that you have the least discomfort and so you don’t irritate yourself or cause pain, if you are still struggling to insert/remove before a bleed, I would strongly advise that you don’t use the cup during a period if you’re still having difficult inserting/removing it and only use it once you have become comfortable with it.

Also, if you do find it gets stuck, the best thing to do is relax and not panic. It cannot get lost inside you and will always be able to be removed, if not by yourself, it can always be removed by a doctor or nurse and it will not get permanently stuck. Panic and stressing will cause you to tense making it harder to remove and will cause swelling, the more you relax the easier it is to get out, if you do struggle and feel it’s stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help from a friend/partner or visit the doctor/A&E if you really have trouble…

I hope that it becomes easier the more I practice as it was a very stressful and difficult experience and caused me a lot more discomfort and irritation than using a tampon or a pad and based on my first experience, I would probably choose to go back to pads or tampons, but I’m hoping that this was just because it was my first time and I’m inexperienced and hope it becomes easier with practice, if it wasn’t so difficult to insert and remove, I would definitely choose to use the cup over pads/tampons

    Hope this helps

I originally bought the large size 4 years ago, because it said I should being over the age of 25 (I’m 46) and having experienced childbirth. That as it turns out, was a mistake – it was obstructive with a full bladder, tricky to retrieve and caused a great deal of pain with the miserable combination of bad cramps and fibromyalgia. I lost one of the pair around a year ago, the end part broke off the second recently making it a nightmare to fish out. This time around I decided to ignore the ridiculous sizing advice and take a chance on the small size and I’m so pleased I did. It causes a lot less pain, is easier to get in and out and lasts the full 12 hours – because I don’t have to take the wretched thing out in order to be able to pee!
